Sleeper red from Jed Steele and a real bargain!
Lots of juicy black fruits, cherries, and mocha notes on this vivacious blend of lake Counties blenders like Syrah, Petite sirah, Zinfandel to name a few. Nice vanilla note on a sleek and smooth finish. Ultimate with BBQ!
Made from grapes grown in Lake County California, north of Napa Valley, Scarlet is made by famous winemaker Jed Steele. For those who only know of Jed from Steele winery, he began by getting his masters in Enology from UC Davis and started Edmeades Winery, famous for their Zinfandel, and then started Kendall-Jackson, famous for…well, everything! Jed founded Steele in 1991 and has been making wine in California for 48 years.
This wine, Scarlet Red is a blend of 40% Cabernet Franc, 20% Syrah, 10% Zinfandel, 10% Pinot Noir and 20% other varietals. All of the red grapes for this blend were aged in neutral American oak, older Hungarian oak as well as French barrels. Depending on the grape varietal, the wine will spend between 8 and 18 months in the oak barrels.
As a non-vintage wine, blends of various vintages are used, which allows the wine to maintain consistency vintage after vintage. Other field blend wines, such as the Marietta Old Vine Red have a similar strategy in blending various grapes together and keeping a consistent flavor profile regardless of the year.
From the winery: “This sinfully delicious blend is amazingly balanced with lively cherry and dark berry notes, cloaked in dark chocolate tannins. A clean acidity runs through the finish. Pair this wine with eggplant parmesan, dry rubbed New York Strip or an assorted cheese and charcuterie plate.”
